Title: Acetyl-CoA Synthetase: Characterization of its Carboxylate Binding Pocket & Regulation in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Abstract: The goal of this project is to develop biocatalysts (enzymes and enzyme systems) that can provide novel acyl-CoA precursors for the fatty acid synthase (FAS) and/or polyketide synthesis (PKS) systems.  The incorporation of such alternative primers into the Fatty Acid Synthesis/PolyKetide Synthesis biosynthetic machinery would diversify the products and create renewable chemical products with various industrial applications. The study of the regulation of ACS in Arabidopsis thaliana will provide an insight into the conditions in which the enzyme is active. Understanding the regulation of ACS would also help in understanding its function in A. thaliana, a fact which still remains unclear.
